Petrol Station Manners
I have been working for a petrol station now for 6 or so months and have finally gotten around to making this list of a few things that make your trip to buy overpriced explosive goo much easer and less frustrating. Due to privacy things I cant say who I work for, and if you know who I work for keep it to yourself.
#1: Do Not use your mobile while on the forecourt (place where the pumps are). Yes it has been proven that mobiles cant start petrol fires, but when you are on them, even with a hands free thing, your attention is not fully on the task at hand and you may not hear other cars or trucks. if you are using or start to use your phone while filling the attendant will shut off the pump.
#2: If you have small kids with you, Keep them in the car and dont let them stand with you while you are filling the car up. If fuel splashes into there eyes it will make them blind, there is nothing that can be done to help there chances of being able to see if this happens. If we see kids at or around the pumps we will shut off the pump.
#3: This is a big one. NO SMOKING ON THE FORECOURT OR AT THE PUMPS. Plain and simple, I can speak for every attendant when I say this, but if i see you smoking, I will use the fire extinguisher on you… I have done it before and will do it again
#4: No matter how busy it is, please don’t move your car, this just creates confusion at the POS.
#5: Take note of the pump number before you enter the store, this will make payment allot quicker.
#6: Check that you have enough money to pay for the fuel BEFORE you fill up. If you do not have enough money it is a lengthy form to fill out before you can leave the site and we only use them if no other way of payment is possible. Basically, if you cant pay your car stays on the site till you can.
#7: If you have a discount voucher and it is rejected, don’t argue or whine about it, we don’t have to give you a discount unless told to by the manager of the site.
#8: If you disagree with the price of fuel, please don’t complain to us about it, we have no control over the price, the pumps update automatically. If you happen to be at the pump and see it change, we didn’t do it just to piss you off, its just bad luck.
#9: If you have a dual fuel car (LPG and unleaded for example) only fill up one fuel at a time, it is a safety hazard to pump more than 1 fuel into the same car. If we see this happen we will shut off both pumps and will not start them till one of them is hung back in the bowser.
#10: DO NOT jam the handle of the pump open with any thing, this is a major safety risk. If it has been jammed open and the tank overfills and spills or the pump handle falls out of the filler hole (I have seen this happen) you will be charged the cost of the fuel that has spilled. If we see that it is jammed open we will shut off the pump and not reactivate it till you unjam it.
#11: This is in relation to #10, DO NOT jam the handle open then sit back in the car. This increases the chance of creating a static charge, if this happens and it sparks near the fuel filler or pump handle, it will ignite and ruin everybody’s day.
#12: If you are on a motorbike and sit on it while wanting to fill, we will not activate the pump. This is a safety thing, if you loose you balance while filling you can cause a spill and we will laugh at you.
#13: Always listen to the site staff, regardless of the circumstance they will always know best, the old “customer is always right” thing does not work in a petrol station and will most likely get you laughed at
and last but not least # 14: There is a large difference between a service station and a petrol station, mainly a servo will have a mechanics shop in it and a petrol station doesn’t. So don’t get all pissy at the staff cause they don’t have the right kind of headlight bulb, cause chances are that you are in a petrol station and not a servo.
Now if you follow these 14 simple things, it will make your trip to the petrol station much more pleasant.
